Ice Maker BasicsHome Ice Maker

Ice Makers allow consumers to produce extra ice wherever and whenever they may need it. There are many different types of ice makers (explained further below) that meet the needs of businesses, offices, or even house parties. In these situations, where a standard built-in freezer’s ice maker may not supply enough ice, people will decide to purchase another ice-making machine to supplement their existing unit.

Types of Ice Makers

  • Freezer Ice Makers – These are the types of ice makers with which the vast majority of consumers are most familiar. They are housed within a freezer and produce crescent-shaped ice cubes.
  • Portable Ice Makers – These units are often purchased for use in the home or in a small office kitchen and are often used to either replace or supplement a freezer ice maker. They can be placed anywhere in the house and do not require a permanent water hookup.  Portable Ice Makers typically produce bullet-shaped ice.
  • Built-in/Freestanding Ice Makers – These are ice makers which are built into the cabinetry in a kitchen and are typically intended to supplement a freezer unit. They typically produce crescent-shaped ice cubes, just like their freezer counterparts.
  • Industrial Ice Makers – These are large units that are usually used only in places where very large amounts of ice are needed, such as in most restaurants. These units typically can produce all kinds of ice, and often will produce clear ice cubes (as opposed to the opaque cubes that the other kinds of ice makers produce).

Types of Ice Cubes

  • Bullet shaped* – This ice is shaped like a bullet with a small hole in the flat end
  • Cube shaped – This is the kind of ice you would get from an ice tray
  • Crescent shaped – This is the same shape that most standard built-in freezers’ ice makers produce, with a curved top and a flat bottom

*Almost all portable ice makers produce bullet shaped ice

Portable Ice Maker Advantages

  • Mobility – Portable Ice Makers can be placed on the kitchen counter (many can fit under the cabinetry), next to the sink, in a cabinet, on a table, really any place you’d like. They are extremely versatile and at an average weight of 35lbs, they can be easily moved from the house to an RV or even a boat.
  • Supplemental Ice Supply – If you constantly find that you and/or your family is in need of more ice than your freezer can keep up with, instead of continuing to buy bags of ice from the store, a cheap solution is to purchase a portable ice maker. They can provide your family with the extra ice they need, especially during the warm summer months!
  • No permanent water hookup required – With portable ice makers, consumers load the water they plan to make ice out of themselves. There is no permanent water hookup needed, which can help conserve water by only inputting the amount you need for however much ice you desire.
